Surface preparation for intumescent coating: the work beneath the visible finish.

A fire-protection coating system can only perform as intended when the steel beneath it meets the approved preparation and primer requirements.

Sa 2.5 describes a visual blast-cleaning standard.

Where specified, very thorough blast cleaning removes visible oil, grease, dirt, mill scale, rust, paint and foreign matter, with only limited staining permitted by the referenced standard. The contract specification remains the acceptance basis.

Profile, dust and contamination still need control.

Clean-looking steel is not the only requirement. Abrasive selection, profile, soluble contamination risk, dust removal and protection from recontamination all influence readiness for primer.

Prepared steel should not be left vulnerable.

Primer application is sequenced within the agreed condition and timing limits. If flash rust or contamination occurs, the affected steel is reassessed before coating continues.

How surface preparation for intumescent coating is assessed

Every project starts with its own issued information and workface conditions. This is the practical sequence used to define a coating scope before mobilisation.

  1. Inspect the existing surface

    Review corrosion, old coatings, contamination, existing primer information and the condition of the actual steelwork before selecting a route.

  2. Prepare to the agreed standard

    Use the specified cleaning or blasting process to address unwanted material and produce the required substrate condition.

  3. Control residue and recontamination

    Manage profile, dust, soluble-contamination risk and protection of the prepared steel before primer or the next coating stage.

  4. Confirm readiness for the system

    Check the agreed acceptance conditions and timing limits before progressing to compatible primer or intumescent coating application.

No. New steel may arrive with an accepted compatible primer, while existing steel may need local or full preparation. The required route depends on condition, coating identity and project specification.

02Can you confirm the required coating thickness from the fire rating alone?

No. The required build is system- and section-specific. We work from the approved product schedule, steel information, required resistance period and project specification.
