Intumescent coating specification guide for structural steel projects.

This guide helps project teams identify the information that should be resolved before an intumescent coating system is priced or planned. It does not select a product, determine a coating thickness or replace the responsible designer, fire engineer or manufacturer guidance.

Start with the project’s design and approved system information.

The fire strategy, required resistance period, steel/member information and selected tested system form the technical starting point. A contractor can help organise a practical work package, but should not substitute a generic product choice, coating build or compliance decision for those project-specific inputs.

A resistance period does not specify every member by itself.

The issued resistance requirement may need to be considered alongside member geometry, section factor, limiting temperature, exposure and the selected product-system data. The approved schedule or equivalent project information translates those inputs into member-specific requirements.

Record what is already on the steel.

New steel may have a shop-applied primer, while refurbishment steel may have old coatings, corrosion, contamination or uncertain repairs. Primer identity, condition and compatibility information should be available before the steel is treated as ready for an application-only route.

Define exposure, finish and interface expectations early.

Environmental exposure, intended finish, topcoat requirements, visible-steel expectations, occupied areas, adjacent surfaces and programme interfaces can affect system selection and delivery planning. These need to be resolved with the relevant design, manufacturer and project parties, not inferred at mobilisation.

Use a planning checklist before asking for a scope review.

The checklist is designed to collect what a contractor needs to understand access, preparation, application route and programme. It is not a design certificate, manufacturer approval request or substitute for the project’s technical documentation.

How to prepare an intumescent coating scope for review

Every project starts with its own issued information and workface conditions. This is the practical sequence used to define a coating scope before mobilisation.

  1. Confirm the design starting point

    Gather the issued fire-resistance requirement, available fire strategy, applicable system information and the responsible contacts for unresolved technical decisions.

  2. Identify the steel and substrate

    Provide member/steel information, existing or shop-applied primer details, condition notes and representative images of typical and difficult areas.

  3. Clarify the work environment

    Record exposure, finish expectations, occupied or live-site interfaces, access limits, masking needs and the programme windows available for the work.

  4. Agree the route for review

    Use the complete information pack to decide whether a preparation-and-coating or application-only route can be assessed, then refer outstanding technical decisions to the responsible project parties.

01Can a 60-minute rating alone be used to specify an intumescent coating build?

No. The required period is only one input. The responsible project team must use the selected system information and member-specific data to establish the applicable requirements.

02Who chooses the coating system?

The appropriate design and project parties select and approve the technical solution using applicable design, manufacturer and project information. A contractor can identify the delivery information needed to plan the agreed scope.

03Can the guide be used for refurbishment steel?

Yes, as a planning prompt. It is especially important to record the condition of existing steel, known coating or primer information, corrosion, local damage and access constraints before deciding whether preparation is needed.

04Can you confirm the required coating thickness from the fire rating alone?

No. The required build is system- and section-specific. We work from the approved product schedule, steel information, required resistance period and project specification.
