A reactive layer at normal film thickness
At everyday temperatures, thin-film intumescent coating resembles a paint finish. When exposed to elevated temperatures, it reacts and expands into a much thicker insulating char.
The objective is to delay steel heating
The char slows heat transfer so the protected steel can remain below its design limiting temperature for the required resistance period supported by the assessed system.

Design inputs, product selection, substrate preparation, primer compatibility and the specified coating build all contribute to the installed system.
